Laying down a marker

Rio Ferdinand is adamant that this weekend's clash between United and Arsenal will not determine the destination of the Premier League title.

The England defender does admit, however, that the Reds can send out an ominous warning to their title rivals with victory at the Emirates Stadium.

"A win at the Emirates would be a great marker to put down," Rio told MUTV. "Although I don't think it will determine where the league is going to go.

"There's only a handful of games gone — but we need to make sure we give a good account of ourselves. We need to make sure we get the points and stay at the top of the league.

"It's a massive game but no matter who wins it will not be a case of 'They're going to win the league' or even 'They'll be the favourites'."

United travel to the Emirates in top form, having notched four goals in four consecutive games, and Ferdinand has been delighted by the Reds' return to their fluent best.

"We're scoring goals and it's a big difference from the start of the season," he admitted. "We were creating chances but weren't converting them.

Messi awestruck by tevez form

Barcelona prodigy Lionel Messi has been highly impressed by the form of compatriot Carlos Tevez since his summer move to United.

Tevez has four United goals to his name, but it has been his scintillating strike partnership with Wayne Rooney that has really captured the attention of the football world.

"Carlos is making a big difference for Manchester United this season," said Messi. "His partnership with Rooney is already something special and I think it will only get better.

"Although they play and move similarly to one another on the pitch, they are going to help Manchester United a lot. They will scare defenders everywhere.

"Those who play the game well understand each other immediately. Good players always manage to play well together."

With Tevez and United in such top form already this season, Messi sees the Reds as genuine contenders for this season's Champions League title - along with Barca.

"Barcelona and United are both great teams," he said. "And they are real candidates for the Champions League."

Injury rules Asif out of first three ODIs

Mohammad Asif will miss at least the first three matches of the ODI series against India with a long-standing elbow problem, the Pakistan board announced on the day of the team's departure to Delhi. Later in the day the team landed in the Indian capital, where they will play a warm-up one-day game against the Delhi side on Friday.

Asif missed four of the five ODIs against South Africa last month because of his right elbow injury and has not recovered sufficiently to play against India. Due to the uncertain nature of the injury, the extent of his participation in the ODIs remains in doubt and a replacement has not yet been sought. Board sources, however, told Cricinfo that Asif is likely to miss the entire ODI series and his participation in the Test series is in doubt.

"He felt pain in the elbow after the Multan ODI [against South Africa, on October 26]. We don't know the extent of the injury," Shafqat Naghmi, the Pakistan board's chief operating officer, said. "He may be fit enough to go to India after three matches so we haven't yet announced a replacement as there are four fast bowlers in the squad anyway."

The elbow injury has lately plagued what has been an outstanding start to Asif's international career. Last year, he missed three Tests against England and the problem flared up during the tour to South Africa in January this year. Some contend it is linked to the often heavy workload Asif has carried out in Tests.

Naghmi said the problem was a rare one. "It is not something that happens a lot. Surgery will not resolve it, nor will medicine. He just needs to strengthen the muscles around the elbow area.

"David Dwyer [Pakistan's fitness trainer] has devised a rehabilitation program for him and he will follow that. This is a problem the player himself knows about first. If he feels fit he will go to India as soon as possible."

"It's a big loss," Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik said. "We will try to overcome the loss and hope that it would not affect the team's performance in the series."

Asif expressed his disappointment at missing the tour and said he was hopeful of being fit in time for the Tests. "It is a big disappointment because a tour to India is always important and I wanted to be part of the team," he told AFP.

The pull-out is the latest in a series of late withdrawals by the bowler: along with Shoaib Akhtar, the pair was pulled out from the World Cup squad at the last minute earlier this year. And last year, a day before the Champions Trophy in India, Asif - and Shoaib again - were called back to Pakistan a day before their opening match against Sri Lanka, after dope tests revealed traces of an anabolic steroid.

Pakistan's pace attack remains a potentially strong one even without Asif. Rao Iftikhar Anjum ended the recent ODI series against South Africa as the joint-highest wicket-taker and a much-improved first-change option. Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir were not as consistent, though they bowled well in patches. But Asif's absence places the heaviest burden on Shoaib, who returned to international cricket on Monday.

In his first spell of international action since January - and his first ODI in 13 months - Shoaib took four wickets without ever appearing to operate at optimum fitness through the nine overs. But with Asif's return unclear, Pakistan will hope that Shoaib can overcome the problems of a traditionally fragile body and lead the attack through five ODIs and three Tests.

Australian stars sign with IPL

Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden are among an extensive list of Australia's frontline players who have signed with the Indian Premier League, according to a report in the Sunday Age. The paper said the BCCI had outlaid more than $2 million to secure the stars for the Twenty20 tournament.

Andrew Symonds, Brett Lee, Nathan Bracken, Michael Hussey, Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson were also reportedly on the list. The IPL has already attracted Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, with Simon Katich and Jason Gillespie also set to play.

The paper reported that Neil Maxwell, a player agent, will hand the groups's IPL contracts to Lalit Modi, the BCCI vice-president, in Dubai on Sunday. Next year's tournament is likely to take place in April, meaning several of the Australian-contracted players might be unavailable as the team will tour Pakistan and West Indies around that time.

Australia's states also have questions over who an Australian player would represent if their Indian franchise and their home state both reached the Champions League following the IPL. "We're still very much at the thrashing-out stage, but I've been led to believe that if that happens, someone like Brett Lee's first commitment would be to his home state," Dave Gilbert, the chief executive of Cricket New South Wales said.

"These sorts of things must be spelt out at the start, so there can't be any grey areas. It would be good to get this worked out as soon as possible."
